Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan
A vision insurance policy is not the same as eye health care. Medically necessary visits to optometrists are covered by Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan care for all Albertans, but vision insurance on the other hand, is a wellness benefit designed to provide routine eye care, prescription eyewear and other vision-related services at a reduced cost. For citizens under age 19 and 65 or older, AHCIP provides coverage for eye exams which are necessary if caused by an illness or physical trauma.
Seniors with low income may be eligible for additional coverage of up to $230 in a 3-year period, specifically for prescription glasses. Eye surgery and medications are not covered, but special exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis by submitting a claim.
